Today’s gym music..and THAT Archie Gemmill goal

Couple of oldies but goodies spewed forth from the iPod gym mix today as I took to the cross-trainer in the works gym.

First up was Blondie‘s Atomic, a simply magical tune in any environment, whether it be the gym or the club. Second is Madonna’s Beautiful Stranger.

For any Scotsman of a certain age Blondie was a high school poster hero of the 70s and 80s.

But I suppose she, and this song, will forever be better be associated with the scene in Trainspotting which moves from the nightclub where Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) and Diane (Kelly Macdonald) first meet, to them getting it on in her bedroom.

The scene is very cleverly cut with Renton’s pal Tommy (Kevin McKidd) and his girlfriend Lizzie (Pauline Lynch) also getting it on to what they hope is a sex tape but which is, in fact, a video of Archie Gemmill’s 1978 goal against Holland. If you’ve seen it you know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t…well I have no words for you.

Trainspotting has been voted the Best Scottish film of all time. I’m not sure that’s true, I mean I love it and everything, but the soundtrack is certainly up there.

As an aside, the nightclub where that video was filmed, The Volcano, was our favourite way back when. It was demolished years ago to make way for flats. Great tune. Worth a listen. Horizontal on Wednesday was our night.

The second is Madonna’s Beautiful Stranger. How can you not like this song??
