Lochend Amateur Boxing Club has become a huge part of the Two Fat Laddies project. Much more than we’d ever have believed possible.
The first night Iain and I rolled up their with Clare and the video gear we thought it would be an hour or so of our lives, and we’d move on.
Instead we’ve become invested in it, addicted.
All three of us attend their various classes regularly, or at least, as often as life and work will allow.
So much so that I found myself heading along three times a week, drawn by the honest toil and guaranteed sweat from work-outs you know just might see me make my target.
You have the real boxers, the up and coming and the more seasoned fighters, working so hard in training that you can’t help but will them to succeed.
Elsewhere you have the likes of us, earnestly trying our best to get or stay fit in great company.
Then there is Terry, Kenny, Jackie and co – welcoming strangers into their wooden gym and classes as if old friends, a keen eye offering advice throughout.
Of all the things we have tried throughout Two Fat Laddies, this remains the one we come back to.
It is a fixture of the community, you can see it in the eyes of all who attend how much it means, and it is a credit to all those who have done so much to make it the success it is.
Through the RBS CommunityForce initiative, the club stands a fighting chance of winning a £6000 grant to help buy in new equipment, turn on the heating and pay the bills.
It’s a worthy cause. I’ve already voted to try and help them secure the cash.
