Given that they are supposed to be helping us lose weight, it would be fair to say Iain and myself were, well, a little bit taken aback by an invitation to FEAST – Scotland’s gastronomic event of the year next weekend.

After all, we’ve surely enough temptations to face as it is without some of the best young chefs in the UK and their Michelin starred counterparts giving cookery demonstrations in front of our very noses.

Far less the organic farmer’s style market where some of the best locally source produce is to be found this coming Saturday.

But what makes this even more or a shock to the system is that our friends at Queen Margaret University and their colleagues at Jewel and Esk College are the fine folk behind the family day out.

That’s right, QMU, the very people who are supposedly trying to help us lose weight through their expertise in diet and nutrition.

You know, the ones who poked and prodded, measure our flabs of skin and told us we had to change our dastardly ways or face the, gulp, consequences (you know, furring of arteries, heart disease, death).

But there is method in their madness.

The day isn’t just a jolly old cook off. It’s genuinely been pulled together to help get people thinking about not just what they eat, but where it comes from.

And let’s face it, we’re blessed with produce here in Scotland. The problem in the past for for me and Iain was, we’d much rather is was deep fried or at least washed down with a bucket of alcohol.

Part of the whole idea behind Two Fat Laddies ideas is to get out and about more and learn how we can enjoy what we eat without beating up our bodies.

Saturday’s event which is being held at the Jewel and Esk’s Milton Road East campus in Edinburgh is just one step along that journey.

The legend that is Albert Roux OBE will be in attendance for a gala dinner the night before, passing on his pearls of wisdom to some of the young chefs who will be assembled from some of the best local kitchens in the land.

And among the chefs taking part in the FEAST food festival are Tom Kitchin, he of one star Michelin restaurant The Kitchin; Derek Johnston who won Masterchef in 2008 and is now to be found at Chez Roux out at Greywalls in Gullane.

Fiona Burrell who founded the Edinburgh New Town Cookery School will also be involved as will Roy Brett, chief proprietor of Ondine in Edinburgh.

But as accomplished and interesteding as they all are, for me the must see is Yogesh Utekar, Indian Master Chef from Mumbai.

Now having visited Mumbai a few years back during a mini-tour of Indian, I still crave some of the food I was able to sample.

Yogesh works for QMU’s partner institution ITM in Navi Mumbai, and you will find me pretty near the front of the queue if there’s a chance to pick up some tips – healthy tips too – about Indian cookery.

My love for spicy foods and Indian in particular is pretty well documented. A quick glance at last week’s food diaries with show a trip to Mezbaan in Brougham Street will provide proof of that.

But Saturday for us will be about education, a chance to take our respective families along and say hello to some friends old and new.

If you want to join us, you can find out more at the web link here. The event starts at 10am and runs until 4pm.
